HELSINKI, Finland, 13 December 2011 — Vienna will get iconic new additions to its skyline, as the Donau-City project erects two high rises on the banks of the famed Danube River. One of the high rises, DC Tower 1, which will be Austria’s tallest building when completed, will be protected by Marioff’s HI-FOG® water mist fire protection system. Marioff Corporation, the leading developer of water mist fire protection technology and supplier of system solutions worldwide, is a part of UTC Climate Controls & Security Systems, a part of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
HI-FOG is an ideal choice for high rise buildings due to its proven exceptional performance and its high pressure technology, which requires up to 90 percent less water than a conventional sprinkler system. HI-FOG’s compact components are designed to fit challenging spaces and are easy to customize, making it a welcome addition to the elegant designs of the modern skyscrapers.
Marioff GmbH completed a case study for DC Tower 1, together with the Austrian accredited testing and inspection organization, IBS Institute for Technical Fire Protection and Safety Research Ltd.
“After we finished the study and completed the drawings it was clear that HI-FOG would bring many benefits to the project over a conventional sprinkler system, resulting in significant cost savings and also providing an environmentally sustainable solution,” says Christian Jindrich, sales manager at Marioff GmbH. “For DC Tower 1, our system will require only 150 cubic meters of water compared to approximately 1000m³ needed for a conventional sprinkler system.”
Compared to a conventional sprinkler system, HI-FOG offers many advantages for DC Tower 1, including fewer sprinkler heads (less than 9,000 compared to approximately 20,000 traditional sprinkler heads); one central pump instead of four intermediate pumps required by conventional sprinklers to reach the higher floors; and only two 60 mm pipes in place of an estimated nine 150 to 200 mm riser pipes used for a conventional system. A conventional system would have also required additional gas-based suppression systems on each floor, which are not needed with HI-FOG.
All of these advantages have led to lower costs for the customer. “The architects and builders have also expressed their pleasure in working with such a compact solution, fitting the system into spaces that would have been impossible to do with a conventional solution,” Jindrich added.
When completed, DC Tower 1 will have nearly 138,000 square meters of floor space. The tower will have 18 floors for a hotel, 33 floors of office space and four floors for luxury apartments and an underground parking garage.
Marioff is the leading developer of water mist fire protection technology and supplies system solutions worldwide. The company designs and manufactures all key components of the water mist fire protection system under the name HI-FOG. The HI-FOG water mist fire protection system is a modern, highly effective solution suitable for most types of fires, on land and at sea. It safely controls and suppresses fire by discharging a fine water mist at high velocity. It uses up to 90 percent less water than conventional sprinkler systems. Less water means less water damage, and less clean-up time, significantly reducing operational downtime.
Marioff is part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security Systems, a division of United Technologies Corp., which provides high technology products and services to the building and aerospace industries worldwide. More information about Marioff can be found on its website at www.marioff.com.
