HI-FOG® for world's largest sailing ship
6 November 2000

The world's largest sailing ship "Royal Clipper" is fitted with a comprehensive HI-FOG fire protection system.

This magnificent 280 passenger cruise ship is the first five-masted sailing ship to be built in 100 years and features three swimming pools and a three-deck atrium. Dutch shipbuilder De Merwede recently completed the outfitting, including installation of a comprehensive Lloyds and MED approved HI-FOG fire protection system.

The HI-FOG system comprises 700 sprinklers in the accommodation and service areas, and 60 spray heads in the machinery spaces. One challenge for Marioff was how to shoehorn the SPAU 5+1 HI-FOG pump / accumulator unit into a very small room with low ceiling height. Several design changes and the replacement of some of the 50 Litre accumulators by 20 Litre ones, solved the problem. Project Coordinator, Lars Dahlström sums up the feelings of the people involved at Marioff: "This was certainly not the largest system we have supplied, but it is a job which all of us here at Marioff are immensely proud."

Mikael Krafft, President and owner of Star Clipper Cruises commented: "Although we have reverted to the past for inspiration, this vessel can only operate with the latest and best technology available. We chose to have HI-FOG as the primary fire protection system because the safety of passengers and crew is our primary concern."
