Marioff attended the 1st Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) Annual Conference
3 December 2014

Marioff UK was invited by the MLM Approved Inspectors, sponsors of the event, to attend the 1st Chartered Association Building Engineers Annual Conference on October 16-17, 2014 at the Swindon Marriott Hotel, U.K. The whole venue had a great ‘buzz’ with plenty of networking throughout the two days between members and the other 14 exhibitors. Over 150 attendees arrived at the CABE Annual Conference, including many CABE members from across the UK and some internationally.

The conference was opened by Lord Lytton with very interesting and informative presentations on day one by Graham Watts OBE, Martin Irvine, Kevin Easton, Gavin Dunn, Francois Samuel and Kevin Blunden. The panel debate was carried out by Richard Cymler, Philip Mansfield and Stuart Samuels who opened what proved to be a lively debate, looking at the ways in which the Building Control Service is provided. After a lively commenting from the floor and some very specific questions in relation to compliance, the fundamental conclusion was that all building control bodies aim to provide a quality service delivered by competent professionals.
“This is an excellent conference. The speakers were not the run-of-the-mill; there was no set script and they responded very well to all the questions,” said Beryl Menzies, PPBEng C.Build E FCABE, Menzies Partners Ltd.

Evening reception

The evening started with a drinks reception followed by the black-tie conference dinner, in which toasts were announced to Her Majesty the Queen and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers. This was followed by the Presidential address by Michael J Wadood BSc(Hons), PCABE, C. Build E, FCABE, FRICS, MCIOB.
The call to action at the end of this afternoon’s debate recognizes that the Chartered Association of Building Engineers now has sufficient status and acceptance in the industry, to start really influencing how the industry develops.
The CABE has evolved and became a leaner, but far more effective organization, it now aspires not only to be equivalent to larger bodies with longer track records, but to be the best.
The challenge is widening to get involved, in the industry. Network, discuss and influence, and help raise the profile of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers and Building Engineering as a profession. Help to continue to evolve as an Association which is known for developing professionals, sharing knowledge and most importantly raising standards.
After the conference dinner, the Benevolent Fund raffle was drawn, which raised over £809 for the Benevolent Fund charity. CABE were very appreciative of all donations to the Benevolent Fund raffle which will go towards supporting its members in need. CABE were also very grateful to London Building Control who topped-up the Benevolent Fund raffle total to £2,000 on the night, making this a record amount raised.
“The whole event was extremely informative for all concerned. Many new contacts were made and the networking for promoting approved water mist systems continues,” said Dugald Cullen, Regional Sales Manager, Marioff UK.
