From daily BIM development to global innovation

In his role as Senior BIM Development Engineer, Oskar Lindström works with the development and continuous improvement of BIM tools, standards, and automated workflows. He supports project teams by providing technical BIM expertise, enabling efficient digital design processes, and ensuring consistent use of BIM across projects. His day to day focus is on supporting sales and project execution by improving how digital design and engineering data is created, structured, and reused — helping teams deliver high quality solutions more efficiently and with better consistency throughout the project lifecycle.

This focus on structured data, automation, and engineering quality is a key part of how Marioff continues to develop its capabilities. At DevCon, that same mindset was put to the test in a fast-paced, team-based innovation environment.

A global collaboration at the Dynamo Hackathon

The Dynamo Hackathon, held as part of Autodesk DevCon in Amsterdam, brings together developers, engineers, and innovators from around the world to experiment with new technologies, particularly within AI, automation, and interoperability.

During the hackathon, Oskar joined an international team of experts from the US, Spain, and the UK. Together, they developed “Orphan X”, an AI-powered tool designed to improve safety in building systems.

Events like this are a great way to test new ideas and see how emerging technologies like AI can be applied in practice. It’s also about learning from others and bringing those insights back into our daily work.

Tackling a critical real-world problem

The team focused on a serious and often overlooked issue in healthcare facilities: so-called “dead legs” in piping systems, sections where water stagnates and can lead to dangerous bacteria growth, including Legionella.

Traditionally, identifying these risks is a slow and manual process, taking engineers several days per building model, and even then, issues can be missed.

From days to seconds with AI

The solution developed by the team uses AI to fully automate this process.

“Orphan X” connects BIM models from Revit with AI through a custom workflow, enabling:

  • Full system analysis across thousands of components
  • Identification of safety risks and code violations
  • Visual highlighting of critical issues directly in the 3D model

What normally takes up to three days can now be completed in around 120 seconds.

While developed in a hackathon setting, the principles behind the solution strongly reflect Marioff’s approach to engineering: using data, automation, and advanced tools to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency.
The ability to analyze complex systems quickly and consistently is increasingly relevant as projects grow in scale and complexity, supporting better decision-making already in the design phase.

Recognition at DevCon

At the end of the hackathon, teams presented their solutions live, and Oskar’s team was selected as the winner. The project stood out for its combination of:

  • Real‑world impact
Applying modern BIM and AI‑enabled Autodesk tools to deliver measurable value in real engineering projects.
  • Technical innovation
Adopting the latest Autodesk technologies, such as Autodesk Assistant (AI), Informed Design, and Dynamo Switchboard, to drive innovation in digital design workflows.
  • Practical application of AI in engineering workflows
Using AI and automation in a practical, production‑ready way to improve efficiency, data reuse, and design quality across projects.

As the project was recognized for its combination of real-world impact, technical innovation, and practical application of AI in engineering workflows, areas that are becoming increasingly important across the industry and in Marioff’s own development.

Driving the future of digital engineering

Autodesk DevCon 2026 gathered over 1,200 industry professionals to explore how AI and digital platforms are transforming design and engineering.

For Marioff, participation in events like this highlights the importance of staying at the forefront of digital development, and the role our experts play in shaping the future. As digital tools, AI, and interoperability continue to reshape the engineering landscape, building internal expertise and staying connected to industry development is essential.

Oskar’s achievement is a great example of how engineering mindset extends beyond projects — into exploring new technologies, challenging existing ways of working, and shaping the future of fire protection and safety-critical systems.
