HI-FOG Marine Service & Commissioning – Salvador Berniel keeps reliability close to reality
For Salvador Berniel, reliability is not a promise on paper. It must be proven on board, often in demanding marine environments where there are no second chances. As a Service & Commissioning Engineer at Marioff, Salvador works at the point where HI-FOG marine fire protection systems move from installation to real-world operation.
A career built in the marine industry

Salvador is an electromechanical engineer with nearly two decades of experience in the marine industry. Before joining Marioff almost four years ago, he had already worked extensively with firefighting systems, service operations and onboard environments.
“When you spend enough time in this industry, you learn which companies are truly respected,” Salvador says. “Marioff was always one of them.”
That reputation eventually led him to apply. Based in Barcelona and working as part of Marioff’s Italy marine service team, Salvador brings his experience to HI-FOG marine service and commissioning projects across Europe and beyond, supporting vessels throughout their lifecycle and ensuring that HI-FOG systems are ready to perform when they are needed most.
What commissioning really means at sea
Commissioning is a critical phase in the lifecycle of a marine fire protection system. It takes place after installation but before the vessel enters operation. Every component must be inspected, tested, and verified in accordance with regulations and class requirements, which may vary depending on the vessel type and flag state.
“The system has to be ready if it is ever needed,” Salvador explains. “That means following the process step by step and making sure everything works exactly as designed.”
This structured and thorough approach reflects Marioff’s commitment to reliability and long-term performance in marine fire protection.

Being the face of Marioff on board
Service and commissioning are not only about technical expertise. When working on board, the Service & Commissioning Engineer is the most visible representative of Marioff.
“You are the face of the company while you are on the vessel,” Salvador says. “It’s about professionalism, communication and helping the crew understand the system.”
One of Salvador’s most rewarding experiences was leading a demanding five-yearly service early in his time at Marioff. The project required extensive system overhauls, coordination with shipyards and flexibility under tight schedules.
“It was challenging, but it taught me a lot,” he says. “You really understand the value of teamwork and problem-solving.”
Through annual inspections and five-yearly services, this close cooperation builds trust and supports Marioff’s role as a long-term partner for marine operators.
Fire protection in a changing marine landscape
Marine fire protection continues to evolve as new technologies and risks emerge. From Salvador’s perspective, continuous learning is essential.
“You need to keep developing and understanding new applications,” he says. “Marioff has decades of experience and the mindset to innovate when needed.”
This combination of experience and engineering-driven development underpins the reliability of HI-FOG systems across cruise, naval, ferry and offshore vessels worldwide.’
Advice for future Service & Commissioning Engineers
For Salvador, marine service and commissioning is ultimately about responsibility. Systems may remain untouched for years, but when something goes wrong, there is no margin for error.
“You prepare for the day you hope never comes,” he says. “And when it does, the system must work.”
That responsibility is shared across Marioff’s global marine service network. Whether working with the Italian service team, supporting vessels across Europe, or calling on colleagues in other regions, Salvador knows he is never working alone. Experience is passed on, questions are answered, and support is always close — even when the vessel is not.
“You might be on board by yourself,” he says, “but you never feel alone.”
At sea, reliability is not a slogan. It is the result of people who understand what is at stake — and systems that are ready when they are needed most. Through experienced engineers like Salvador and a connected global service organization, Marioff ensures that HI-FOG marine fire protection systems are always prepared to protect what matters most.
