Machinery space fire protection

Machinery spaces and pump rooms on vessels require special fire protection. The nature of the equipment and the heat they generate can turn small malfunctions into serious fires – that’s why we offer specially designed water mist fire protection systems for spaces like marine engine rooms. With the HI-FOG system, we provide peace of mind to operations.

HI-FOG spray heads are type-approved by all major classification societies.

Machinery spaces are protected according to IMO regulations:

  • Local protection according to IMO MSC/Circ.913, IMO MSC.1/Circ.1387.
  • Total flooding according to IMO MSC/Circ. 1165 as amended by IMO MSC.1/Circ.1237, MSC.1/Circ. 1269 and MSC.1/Circ.1386.

The local application system is designed to protect most hazardous machinery equipment on board – such as engines, purifiers, and boilers. HI-FOG spray heads are divided into sections so that each protected object has its own section valve. In the event of fire, the HI-FOG system is activated as soon as the section valve is released either manually or automatically through the fire detection system.

The total flooding system is designed to protect whole machinery compartments by discharging large amounts of water mist through all the spray heads at the same time. When a fire is detected, the water mist can be discharged immediately without need for evacuation. The relevant compartment is activated from the control panel, normally located in the engine control room. The HI-FOG total flooding system is a fully approved alternative to gas or foam systems for suppressing or extinguishing fires in machinery spaces.
